Northern Virginia is considered to many the most desirable suburb of Washington D.C. Many people live in Northern Virginia while working in Maryland or the District of Columbia. Many people believe that the majority of workers in the Northern Virginia area are government workers, but, this is not true. The private sector is the major employer for the area mainly in the service industry (including, legal, health, and engineering services).

The Northern Virginia area has many attractions to keep you entertained. Popular sites include Wolf Trap National Park which is America’s only national park dedicated to the performing arts, the Nissan Pavilion which hosts many concerts and events, George Mason University’s Center for the Performing Arts, and various major shopping malls. In addition to Virginia’s attractions you have the lure of DC’s museums, sports teams, National Zoo, and The Kennedy Center.

Though most Northern Virginia residents commute to work alone, their are a variety of options in regards to public transportation. There is the Metro Rail, Metro Bus, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), and carpools. Many use the Metro Rail system which travels through Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Maryland, and D.C.  Vienna is the farthest you can travel into Virginia via the Metro. There are plans to extend the Metro Rail all the way to Dulles Airport. Those that don’t live along the Metro Rail route may take Metro Busses to their desired destination or have the bus connect them to the Metro Rail.  Another alternative are the various organized car/van pools. For those wishing to leave the Washington Metropolitan area, popular choices are Dulles International Airport, National Airport, and Amtrak.
